Ativan may be habit forming. Physical and/or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment. NOT take more than the prescribed amount of medication or take it for longer than is directed by your physician. NOT stop taking Ativan suddenly without first talking to your physician if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. your physician may want to gradually reduce the dose.
Ativan is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Ativan affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety, insomnia, and seizures.
